About the School LAND Trust Program
The School LAND Trust (SLT) Program provides annual funding to Utah K–12 public schools to improve student academic achievement. Through local decision-making and parent involvement, locally elected school councils identify students’ greatest academic needs and determine how SLT funds can best address them.
The Utah State Board of Education School Children’s Trust team administers the program, providing oversight, support, training, and resources.

How Schools Use the Funds
Each school’s council uses school data to identify priority academic needs and develops a unique plan with goals, action steps, and expenditures to improve student achievement. Depending on the school’s approved plan, funds may support:
- Educators and academic support personnel
- Academic interventions and learning opportunities
- Technology, instructional materials, and academic programs
- Professional learning
- Other allowable expenditures consistent with School LAND Trust Program requirements
Where Does the Money Come From?
The School LAND Trust Program is supported by Utah’s permanent State School Fund, an endowment established for the benefit of Utah’s public schools.
When Utah became a state in 1896, Congress granted lands to the state to be held in trust for designated public institutions, with public schools receiving the largest grant. Revenue generated from school trust lands is deposited into the permanent fund and invested for the long-term benefit of K-12 public-school beneficiaries. Annual distributions from the fund support schools through the School LAND Trust Program.

Questions, Support, or Concerns?
The School LAND Trust Program is built on local decision-making. Information about a school’s council, elections, meetings, and other local requirements can be found on the school’s website. School LAND Trust plans and reports are also available on the SLT Public Reports Website.
Questions about a specific school’s council, elections, meetings, plan, or use of funds are best directed to the school or local education agency (LEA). Concerns or complaints should generally be addressed first at the local level to provide the school or LEA an opportunity to review and respond.
For questions about statewide program administration, requirements, training, compliance, or the SLT Reporting Website, the USBE School Children’s Trust team is available to help.
